Adrenal Glands: Supporting Energy, Resilience, and Recovery
If you’ve ever felt exhausted despite getting enough sleep, relied on caffeine to get through the day, or found yourself craving salty foods during stressful periods, you’ve probably wondered about your adrenal health.
The adrenal glands are two small glands that sit on top of the kidneys. Their role is to produce hormones that help regulate stress response, blood pressure, metabolism, electrolyte balance, and energy production. Conventional medicine recognizes several adrenal disorders, including Addison’s disease and adrenal insufficiency, while many natural health practitioners also discuss the effects of long-term stress on adrenal function and overall vitality.

The Adrenals and Stress
The adrenal glands produce hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which help the body respond to physical and emotional stress. When a stressful event occurs, these hormones help increase alertness, mobilize energy, and prepare the body for action.
According to Dr. Robert Morse, the adrenals and kidneys are closely connected. He often teaches that weakened adrenal function can contribute to low energy, poor stress tolerance, and reduced vitality. Dr. Morse emphasizes supporting the body through rest, hydration, fruit-rich nutrition, herbal support, and lymphatic wellness.
Medical Medium also places significant emphasis on adrenal health. Anthony William teaches that chronic stress, emotional challenges, irregular eating patterns, and repeated adrenaline surges can place strain on the body over time. He recommends nutritious foods, regular meals, mineral-rich produce, and blood sugar stability as ways to support the adrenals.
Signs Your Adrenals May Need Support
Many natural health practitioners associate the following symptoms with adrenal stress:
- Persistent fatigue
- Difficulty handling stress
- Brain fog
- Trouble concentrating
- Sleep disturbances
- Salt cravings
- Feeling wired at night but tired during the day
- Feeling thirsty despite drinking water
- Reduced resilience during challenging periods
It’s important to note that these symptoms can also be associated with many other health conditions. Persistent fatigue or unexplained symptoms should always be discussed with a qualified healthcare provider.
Foods That Support Adrenal Health
One of the simplest ways to support the adrenals is through consistent nourishment.
Medical Medium recommends eating every 90 minutes to two hours when under significant stress. This approach is intended to help stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce the need for the body to rely on adrenaline as an emergency fuel source.
Foods commonly recommended for adrenal support include:
- Fresh fruit
- Bananas
- Apples
- Dates
- Wild blueberries
- Leafy greens
- Celery
- Coconut water
- Citrus fruits
- Sprouts and microgreens
From a fruit-based nutrition perspective, these foods provide natural sugars, minerals, hydration, and phytonutrients that help fuel the body’s cells while supporting overall wellness.
Herbs Traditionally Used to Support the Adrenals
Herbalists have long turned to specific plants to support the body’s response to stress, encourage recovery, and nourish the endocrine system. While herbs are not a substitute for rest, hydration, or a nutrient-rich diet, they can be valuable allies when used as part of a broader wellness approach.
Some herbs commonly used for adrenal support include:
- Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) – Traditionally used to support energy levels and adrenal function.
- Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) – An adaptogenic herb often used to help the body cope with physical and emotional stress.
- Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) – Traditionally used to support stamina, mental clarity, and resilience.
- Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) – Sometimes called Siberian ginseng, this herb has a long history of use for endurance and stress support.
- Schisandra Berry (Schisandra chinensis) – Valued in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its restorative and balancing properties.
- Nettle Leaf (Urtica dioica) – Rich in minerals and often used as a nourishing tonic herb.
- Oatstraw (Avena sativa) – Traditionally used to support the nervous system during times of stress and depletion.
- Holy Basil (Tulsi) (Ocimum tenuiflorum) – A revered herb in Ayurvedic medicine known for its calming and restorative qualities.
Many herbalists view the adrenals and nervous system as closely connected. During periods of chronic stress, nourishing herbs, mineral-rich foods, adequate sleep, and supportive daily practices often work together to create the best foundation for recovery.
Lifestyle Habits for Healthy Adrenals
Food is only part of the equation.
Many people find that their energy improves when they prioritize:
- Consistent sleep
- Time in nature
- Stress reduction practices
- Gentle movement
- Hydration
- Emotional healing work
- Reduced reliance on stimulants such as excessive caffeine
The body has an incredible capacity to recover when given the proper conditions. Sometimes supporting the adrenals begins with slowing down, nourishing yourself consistently, and creating more space for rest.
A Balanced Perspective
While the term “adrenal fatigue” is widely used in the natural health community, it is not currently recognized as an official medical diagnosis by mainstream medical organizations. However, the symptoms often associated with adrenal stress are very real and deserve attention. Chronic stress, poor sleep, inadequate nutrition, and emotional overwhelm can significantly affect how we feel day to day.
Whether you resonate with the teachings of Dr. Morse, Medical Medium, or a more conventional health perspective, the core message remains similar: support your body, reduce unnecessary stress, nourish yourself consistently, and create conditions that allow true healing to occur.

Personal Anecdote
Several years ago, my nervous system was in a very different place. I was in a relationship that triggered my cPTSD symptoms on a regular basis. Even when there wasn’t an obvious conflict, my body rarely felt safe. I was constantly anticipating the next misunderstanding, criticism, or emotional shift, and my nervous system stayed on high alert. Existing in that state required an incredible amount of energy every single day, which sometimes manifested as just deep exhaustion, and the world feeling gray. I dissociated, and consistently was fighting to rest ‘enough’ – my environment made it so that it was incredibly challenging to find peace.
Healing didn’t happen overnight, and it didn’t come from one food, one herb, or one practice. It came through a four years of therapy, re-learning how to respect my own values, creating healthier boundaries for myself and my son, giving myself permission to truly rest, reconnecting with Source, letting go of feeling responsible for other adults in my life, and letting go of the expectations other people had for my life. My fruit-rich diet, herbal support, hydration, deep rest, and spending time in nature became meaningful pieces of the puzzle.
Today, I experience great peace, and more resilience than I have before. Life still has its challenges of course, but I no longer live in survival mode. That experience changed the way I think about adrenal health. I don’t believe healing comes from a single solution. Food, herbs, sleep, emotional safety, supportive relationships, and learning to regulate the nervous system all work together. Caring for our adrenals also means creating a life where our body no longer has to brace for ‘what’s coming next,’ and rather, learning to find deep safety and connection in our lives.
